Notice I said underrated. I did that for a reason. Everyone knows the greats, right? Page, Hendrix, Clapton, Young, Iommi and Van Halen. Plus a slew of others, but I want to talk about the ones people forget about or don’t realize how great they are. There are many reasons why these guitarists are unsung, could be the band they are in, their political views or just simply they just aren’t popular anymore.
My mission is to change that and I am only limiting myself to ten, but the list could be so much longer. Now this doesn’t mean you don’t know who they are, but more like they don’t get the respect they deserve. You may recognize most of them, but you may not. If you don’t, you will take pleasure in finding out more about them. How I envy you! I will list the guitarist and a song I think they are most known for or should be known for playing. The list will begin from the least known to the more familiar:
10- Rory Gallagher (Jimi Hendrix’s Idol). Bullfrog Blues:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33Jaodra7AY
9- Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top). La Grange: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vppbdf-qtGU
8- Nuno Bettencourt (Extreme). Get The Funk Out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1AxoPTAgxA
7- Myles Kennedy (Alter Bridge/Slash) Duel Guitars with Mark Tremonti:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VHmluDUw1c
6- Ted Nugent (Ted Nugent). Stranglehold: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xk0keMJFLAg
5- Buck Dharrma (Blue Oyster Cult). Cities On Flame With Rock And Roll: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OBs6S1lW_Q
4- Alex Lifeson (Rush) Spirit Of The Radio: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQUDiCiNlqQ
3- Brian May (Queen). Tie Your Mother Down: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LvB2MnIIdMw
2- Richie Kotzen (Winery Dogs). Time Machine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qhxvnMDf2E
1- Ace Frehley (KISS). Shock Me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iauaDVVPGW8
Understand there are many more I should list, but I’m trying to show you that these guitarists are excellent in their own right, by whom they influenced, the sound they created etc. You may beg to differ, but I think you would have to agree that a majority of these guys deserve more recognition. I didn’t mention many of the grunge guitarists because most are known for their guitarists as much as their singers and some of them didn’t even do solos. But you can debate with me my choices or tell me yours. Put your axe on the line.
