Outside of concept albums, does the cover art/photo of an album add any value to the artist/band's music or brand?

Some examples are The Beatles Sgt. Pepper, Bowie's Ziggy Stardust and Pink Floyd's The Wall. An exception to me would be Kiss's Lick It Up album where the band unmasked themselves.
